I hope everyone had a happy 4th of July holiday! I certainly did. I took an extra vacation day and ended up with 5 days off from work. It was enough time to work on some projects including this art journal page which I’ve been thinking about for a while. The tree trunk stamp was inspired from a dead grouping of trees at Brazos Bend state park, and a low quality photo was enough to sketch the outline of the tree’s “bones”. I stamped it with Versafine ink which is waterproof and my favorite black ink for stamping. You just don’t get better detail in black stamps. Next I splattered green watercolor paint on the page and blew the spots with a straw. The other colors are just splattered on. I found that tight or firm brushes make lots of fine spots, while the loose inexpensive craft brushes make bigger sloppier splatters. Next I hand wrote several phrases from books or quotes I like, and doodled some little flowers. The title is made from stamps – “discover” is from a set of word stamps I bought, and I carved the “Yourself” from my own handwriting. I wanted to add a little extra, so I also carved some tiny leaf shapes out of scrap material and stamped them in different colors.
The stamp will be in the gallery shortly and I’ll include an early stamping of it (before the carving was cleaned up) as it might work for a Halloween project.
